By a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court affirmed the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act.
Hearing about the decision brought us back to the good, bad, and ugly — as well as the hilarious hijinx we pulled off — during the epic fight for health care reform a couple years ago.
While all of us would prefer a “Medicare for All” style alternative, this is nonetheless a HUGE victory. It provides health insurance to 30 million uninsured Americans, makes it illegal for insurance companies to discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions, and affirms a host of other provisions that will increase access to health care and lower its cost for Americans from coast to coast.
Let’s celebrate! Not just the victory this week, but some of the truly ridiculous and sublime things we did back in 2009 & 2010 to make this victory possible:
Public Option Annie – remember when we snuck professional opera singers into the insurance industry’s top gathering… and blew out John Stewart’s ear drums…?
Track Meet ad – we wrote it, MoveOn produced it and Heather Graham starred in it.
Dawn Smith Goes to Washington – abandoned by her insurance companies, but not by her fellow Americans, Dawn Smith, with help from us and MoveOn, took her fight to DC and onto Cigna’s doorstep
Citizen Posse – remember how we deputized 3000 Americans in the streets of DC and laid siege to the insurance industry?
It was a wild ride. Thank you for going on it with us. It’s nice to finally arrive, victory in hand.
This week we’re celebrating, next week we’re going back to agitating.
